The Paperwork Happens Before the Shovel

Your sewer line is backing up and you want it fixed today. That is fair. In Evesham Township, though, a few steps have to happen before anyone breaks ground.

There is a permit to open the street and a state markout of every buried line. There is a construction permit for the plumbing work. There is an inspection of the pipe before the trench closes.

None of that is meant to slow you down. It is there so the next crew knows where your pipe is and so the road gets put back right. Our sewer line repair crews handle all of it for you.

Here is what each step is, who asks for it, and how long it adds to the job. The Sewer Kings pulls these permits as part of the repair.

A Street Opening Permit From Evesham Public Works

Most sewer laterals run from the house, under the lawn, past the curb and into the main in the street. The moment a repair reaches township pavement, a permit is needed.

The Application Is in Writing

Evesham Township code makes it unlawful to cut or open a township street for underground work without a permit. The application goes in writing to the Department of Public Works.

It Names the Exact Hole

The application states the street and the reason for the work. It also gives the exact location, length, width and depth of the opening. Guesswork does not pass.

Money Is Held Against the Repave

The township holds a deposit before it issues the permit. The minimum is $500.00 for an opening up to 50 square feet. A guarantee bond can stand in when the deposit would run over $1,000.00.

That deposit is not a fee for the privilege of digging. It is the township making sure the pavement gets restored properly once the pipe is fixed.

Not every road in Evesham belongs to the township. Route 70 and Route 73 are state highways. County roads answer to Burlington County. Work in those lanes goes through a different office.

The Markout Comes Before Any Digging

New Jersey law says nobody digs until the buried lines are marked. The call goes to the One Call center at 811, and it is free.

Three Business Days of Notice

The notice has to reach the center at least three business days before the dig starts. It cannot go in more than 10 business days ahead. Weekends and state holidays do not count.

Every Utility Sends Someone Out

Gas, electric, water, cable and phone each send a locator out. They spray paint and flag their own lines across your lawn and the street. That is why a dig site looks like a color chart for a few days.

The Notice Has a Shelf Life

A markout stays good for 45 business days as long as the marks are kept visible. Work that runs past that needs a fresh call.

Homeowners are not exempt from any of this. Under the state rules, a homeowner who digs is an excavator, the same as a contractor.

This is the step people skip when a basement is filling up. It is also the one that hits a gas line. When we take the job, we make the call and we wait for the paint.

The Permit and the Inspection on the Pipe Itself

Opening the road and replacing the pipe are two different approvals. The pipe work runs through the Evesham Township Construction Office at 984 Tuckerton Road in Marlton.

What Gets Filed

The township packet includes a construction permit application and a plumbing subcode technical form. A plumbing contractor puts a seal on the application before it goes in. Either the owner or the contractor can file, but that sealed page has to come from a licensed shop.

File Before You Dig, Not After

The office is clear that permits are obtained before work starts. Skipping that can bring a violation notice and a penalty on top of the repair bill. The Construction Office takes permit questions at (856) 983-2914, Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm Eastern.

The EMUA Wants 48 Hours of Notice

The Evesham Municipal Utilities Authority owns the main in the street. It sets the rules for the pipe that ties into it. The contractor has to tell its inspection department 48 hours ahead when an inspection is needed. Work buried without that inspection counts as unacceptable.

The Pipe Has to Match the Spec

The Authority’s rules call for a six inch ductile iron or PVC lateral. A cleanout sits just behind the curb line. The run is straight, laid at a quarter inch of fall per foot. Minimum cover is 36 inches over PVC and 32 inches over ductile iron.

A new tie-in to an existing main is made with a wye saddle, not a patch clamp. The Authority’s own regulations then leave final approval of the installation with the building and plumbing inspector.

What the inspector finds also depends on what is already in the ground. Our guide to the sewer pipe materials under older Marlton homes covers the clay, cast iron and plastic we dig up around the township.

The EMUA office sits at 100 Sharp Road and the number is 856-983-1878. That same line is the one to call when sewage is backing up and you want the main checked first.

How We Run a Permitted Dig at Your Home

You do not file any of this yourself. We camera the line first, mark where the break sits, then file the paperwork that matches that exact spot.

The markout call goes in the same day. Those three business days are usually the longest part of the wait, and we book the dig around them.

On the day, the opening is kept as small as the repair allows. A smaller hole means a smaller deposit, less pavement to put back, and less lawn to reseed.

The trench stays open until the inspector has seen the pipe. Only then does The Sewer Kings backfill, compact and restore the surface, and our guide to Evesham’s sandy Pinelands soil and buried sewer lines explains why the bedding under the pipe matters as much as the pipe.

You get a flat price before any of it starts, and it covers the permits. There is no second number once the pipe is in the air.

A line that is actively backing up is treated as an emergency, and the rules allow for that. The paperwork still follows, it just does not hold up a house full of sewage.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Sewer Repair Permits in Evesham Township

Yes. Opening a township street for underground work needs a written street opening permit from the Department of Public Works. The plumbing work needs its own construction permit from the Township Construction Office. The two are filed separately.

At least three business days before the dig, and no more than 10 business days ahead. The call goes to New Jersey One Call at 811 and it is free. The markout stays valid for 45 business days while the marks remain visible.

We do. Evesham Township allows either the owner or the contractor to apply. The plumbing page still has to carry a licensed contractor’s seal. Call The Sewer Kings at (856) 626-9366 and the filing is handled with the job.
